What an HST invoice has to show in Canada

Your client needs the right details on your invoice to claim the HST back. The federal rules (Input Tax Credit Information Regulations, s. 3) go by the invoice total:

  • Under $100: your business name, the date, and the total.
  • $100 to $499.99: all of that, plus your GST/HST registration number and the HST charged (or a note that HST is included, with the rate).
  • $500 and over: all of that, plus your client's name, the payment terms, and a description of the work clear enough to identify it.

Fill in the fields above — with your payment terms in the notes — and the PDF covers every line on that list.

HST and GST rates by province (2026)

ProvinceRate
Ontario13% HST
Nova Scotia14% HST (since April 1, 2025)
New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island15% HST
Alberta, the territories5% GST
British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, Saskatchewan5% GST, plus provincial sales tax charged separately

This generator adds GST or HST only. Where a province charges its own sales tax on top, check with your bookkeeper what applies to your work.

Quote or estimate?

Call it a quote when the price is fixed. In Ontario an estimate is read as a best guess that can change; a quote is the price your client agrees to. Extra work then goes on a new quote, so nobody argues about the final invoice.

When the paperwork is every week

A one-off invoice is fine here. If you run a crew, CrewHub keeps it all in one app: crew clock-ins with GPS, hours ready for payroll, quotes your client approves from their phone, and invoices with HST — for one price for the whole crew.
